Applying for an Airmiles Credit Card

by John_S on September 20, 2014

Credit unions, online companies, airlines, and big banks such as Scotiabank and the Bank of Montreal offer airmiles cards to customers. Travel cards are available to existing and new individual customers and businesses.

How to Get a Card

Air miles credit cards are reserved for high income earners and creditworthy applicants. Financial establishments require that applicants provide their social insurance number to run a credit check. Customers who filed for bankruptcy see their applications declined.

Issuers offer platinum and other specialty cards with benefits such as discounts toward accommodation, hotel upgrades, and others. Canadian banks feature specialty cards with air miles that go toward airfare, electronics, tickets, and more. Holders are offered referral bonuses, free supplementary cards, reserved ticket access, assured reservations, and comprehensive coverage. Cards with no foreign transaction fees are ideal for frequent travelers and international travels. Many issuers also feature unlimited air miles for discounted airfare and free travels, flexible points redemption, and premium rewards such as tours, cruises, packaged holidays, car rentals, and hotels, and others. Financial institutions also partner with major Canadian and other airlines and offer bonus points toward air travel.

The Royal Bank of Canada offers promotions, flight deals, and extra points. With some banks, long haul flights, whether domestic or international, require 35,000 to 100,000 points. Some issuers offer rewards points that can be converted to air miles and used toward international and domestic flights. Specialty credit cards offer platinum benefits such as pre-sale tickets, annual fee waivers, membership rewards, and other perks. Many cards go with perks such as reservations for ship, train, limousine, and air travel and access to activities such as skiing, scuba diving, and others. Specialty cards feature free international shipping and discounts at luxury restaurants. Some cards also feature zero balance transfer fees and allow holders to consolidate high rate balances. Banks offer specialty cards with discounts on aquarium admission, ocean centers, and merchandise, including electronics and accessories. Additional cards are offered to close family members such as domestic partners, siblings, parents, children, and spouses. Travel cards offer attractive rewards, but some financial institutions charge high returned check and annual fees. Other fees and charges to watch for include balance transfer, application, and late fees, finance charges, over-limit fees, and others. Clients with average credit are offered travel cards but higher interest rates apply.
